About
Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is the only national wildlife refuge in the country established to protect endangered plants and insects, including the Antioch Dunes evening primrose, Contra Costa wallflower, and Lange’s metalmark butterfly. Established in 1980, the refuge preserves 67 acres of a rare riverine sand dune ecosystem along the San Joaquin River. Because of the delicate nature of these habitats, the refuge is closed to unsupervised public access to protect species from trampling and wildfires. However, the refuge staff provides environmental education through monthly guided tours and volunteer habitat restoration projects.
