About
Ellicott Slough National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1975 to protect the endangered Santa Cruz long-toed salamander in Santa Cruz County. Over time, its mission expanded to protect the California red-legged frog and California tiger salamander across units like Calabasas and Harkins Slough. Due to the sensitive nature of these habitats, the refuge remains closed to visitors. It is managed as part of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
