About
In October 2016, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved the establishment of Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge to manage shrubland and young forest habitats in the Northeast. The refuge identifies 10 acquisition focus areas across six states—Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York—with authority to acquire up to 15,000 acres from willing sellers. These conservation efforts benefit a variety of species, including New England cottontails, monarch butterflies, and several species of declining land birds and turtles.
