Visiting Izembek National Wildlife Refuge requires a flight or ferry ride to Cold Bay. No public use facilities exist in the refuge. Visitors should be prepared for frequently occurring wind, rain, fog, and cold temperatures. Topography varies from sea level to rugged volcanic peaks exceeding 9,000 feet. Be sure to familiarize yourself with safety in bear country.

Located at the tip of the Alaska Peninsula, Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is a volcanic landscape featuring Izembek Lagoon, home to one of the world's largest eelgrass beds. The refuge provides vital habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory waterfowl, including the entire population of Pacific black brant, as well as coastal brown bears and all five salmon species.
Most of the refuge is designated as Wilderness, ensuring the protection of its natural diversity and pristine habitats for both wildlife and human sustenance. Its mission is to fulfill international treaty obligations and provide opportunities for subsistence and scientific research.
