The La Crosse Fish Health Center specializes in morphologically and molecularly identifying parasites, organisms that rely on aquatic hosts for survival and can cause significant pathology, from wild and cultured fish, freshwater mussels, and amphibians.
Why Our Parasitology Work Matters
Parasitic infections can cause morbidity and mortality in fish populations. Rapid, accurate identification enables targeted therapeutic interventions and management strategies to safeguard aquatic resources.
By integrating classical morphology and advanced molecular tools (such as SSU/LSU rRNA sequencing), our lab refines diagnostic assays, tracks pathogen distribution, and routinely discovers and describes novel species previously unknown to science.
Diagnostic Scope
Our parasitology services are dedicated exclusively to fish and other aquatic animals. We do not perform diagnostic testing for human parasites.
