About
Lost Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in the 1930s and 1940s in response to declining waterfowl populations and to provide employment during the Great Depression. Unlike typical national wildlife refuges, this land is not federally owned but remains in private or state ownership under easements. Consequently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does not control public access; instead, it is managed by private landowners or other entities.
