Get Involved
National wildlife refuges provide many opportunities for you to help your community by doing what you love. National wildlife refuges partner with volunteers, youth groups, landowners, neighbors and residents of urban and coastal communities to make a lasting difference.
Services
Unusual among Refuges, Midway also supports an ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards) runway, known as Henderson Field, which can serve as an emergency landing strip for aircraft transiting the Pacific. Airfield operations are critical to Refuge operations, permitting transportation of services and goods, and aviation activities.
About
Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1988 and later designated the Battle of Midway National Memorial in 2000 to honor the historical victory of World War II. The atoll serves as a critical sanctuary for nearly three million birds, including the world's largest albatross colony, and provides habitat for endangered species like Hawaiian monk seals and Laysan ducks. Today, staff and volunteers work within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to restore natural biological diversity and protect significant cultural and historical resources.
