About
Established in 1999, Navassa Island National Wildlife Refuge is an uninhabited island located between Haiti and Jamaica that protects over 600 terrestrial species. The island's history includes phosphorite mining under the Guano Island Act and the operation of a Coast Guard lighthouse from 1917 to 1996. The refuge's mission is to preserve coral reef ecosystems, marine environments, and restore native wildlife.
