Visitors will discover scenic landscapes and opportunities to view wildlife, all within a short drive of the Portland-Vancouver metro area. A close-by escape from the city, the Refuge provides a home for local animals and plants that live here year-round, as well as those that migrate here for a season.
Directions to Mt. View Trailhead:
- From Vancouver, WA travel east on WA SR 14 for about 18 miles
- A brown sign indicates the Refuge is ahead 1/4 mile
- Just past Washougal River Road will be 45th Street on your left and the Refuge on your right.
Directions to River Trailhead:
- Accessed from the western entrance of the Refuge near Index Street (see William Clark Park).
Any pre-registered educational group will have their parking fee waived for all participants and vehicles. Additionally, Refuge Office Supporters help sell entrance passes at the front desk.

About
Steigerwald Lake NWR was established in 1987 to offset lowland habitat loss caused by construction at the Bonneville dam. These lands were established to reduce the impact of this loss and provide more habitat for migrating and resident wildlife. Since then smaller pieces of land have been added to create what is now Steigerwald Lake NWR. Staff and partners strive to work with the community to restore and conserve Oregon oak woodlands, pastures and wetland habitats.
