Birding

At Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge

As one of the driest areas in the country, the Lahontan Valley serves as a vital stopover site for thousands of migratory birds within the greater Saline Lake ecosystem in the Great Basin that also provides important habitat for other native wildlife.

Similar to photography, bird watching is an enjoyable pastime of citizens from around the world. Yes, avid birders will travel all over America for a glimpse of species unique to that one area, or perhaps more common in that flyway.

Cinnamon teal, coots, great blue herons, greater and lesser egrets, and ruddy ducks are some of the local birds found enjoying the peacefulness of Stillwater NWR. If you're new to the activity, consider the eBird application from Cornell, that will allow you to listen to different calls and help you identify an unfamiliar species.
