About
Susquehanna National Wildlife Refuge, also known locally as Battery Island, was established in the 1940s to protect migratory waterfowl habitat at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Although it once supported hundreds of thousands of ducks, the area saw a sharp decline in aquatic vegetation due to water quality changes and Hurricane Agnes. Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers restored the island to approximately 11 acres of habitat using clean dredged material to support black ducks and other waterbirds.
