Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge provides numerous recreational opportunities for visitors. People enjoy viewing the unique geology and diverse wildlife, whether boating, driving, or hiking.
To locate Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge, take Highway 52 to 1 mile northwest of Foxholm, then north 7 miles on County Road 11. The Refuge can also be reached by traveling 18 miles north of Minot on Highway 83, then west 12 miles on Country Road 6.

At this field station we offer the following public services:
- A small contact station with local hunting and wildlife viewing information.
- Educational brochures, including a map of Waterfowl Production Areas.
- Environmental education programs for local schools and groups (contact Refuge manager).
- Administration of cooperative agriculture programs.
- Issuance of Special Use Permits.
- Project reviews related to energy development when U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service interests are involved.
About
Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 565 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System, established in 1935 as a breeding ground for migratory birds. Spanning 35 miles along the Souris River corridor in North Dakota, the refuge serves as a vital unit in the Central Flyway migration corridor. Habitats like Lake Darling are managed to provide diverse life requirements for wildlife, including native grasslands and a resident Canada goose flock.
