About
Cottonwood Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a limited-interest refuge in North Dakota established to protect habitat for migrating waterfowl and other wildlife. Unlike most refuges, this land is not federally owned; it remains in private or state ownership with easements dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. Access is strictly controlled by the private landowners or entities rather than the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge is managed by the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge under a specific Comprehensive Conservation Plan.
