About
Island Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides loafing and feeding sites for shorebirds, gulls, and terns, while surrounding waters support manatees and sea turtles. Established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt, the refuge was later designated a Wilderness Area in 1970. The site features large mounds built by the Calusa Indians who historically inhabited the coastal area of South Florida.
