About
The Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland fed primarily by rainfall runoff, established in 1989 as a critical freshwater habitat for birds in Puerto Rico. The refuge aims to restore the wetland ecosystem and protect remnants of subtropical dry forest. It includes the geologically ancient Sierra Bermeja hills, which support many endemic plant species. Historically, nearly half of Puerto Rico's recorded bird species have been observed within the lagoon and surrounding hills.
