About
Theodore Roosevelt NWR is located near the site of President Roosevelt’s famous 1902 Mississippi bear hunt, where he famously refused to shoot a stunned bear, leading to the creation of the "Teddy Bear." The refuge was formed in 2004 under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act and is one of nine refuges within the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Although the refuge lands are currently closed to the public, it is active in land acquisition and forest management to protect bottomland hardwood habitats and resident wildlife.
