About
Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1951 as a breeding ground for colonial bird species, including herons, egrets, and endangered brown pelicans. Tarpon Key, one of the refuge islands, hosts the largest brown pelican rookery in the state of Florida. The refuge is managed as part of the Crystal River NWR Complex and is closed to public use year-round to protect sensitive habitat.
