Hiking

At Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge

On the refuge, there are two hiking trails open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset.

The Meadowlark Nature Trail is a short trail created with families and disabilities in mind. This .5-mile trail leads visitors around the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center on crusher fines and concrete paths to see the playa lakes and prairies covering the refuge landscape.

The Gallinas Nature Trail is a longer trail created for the hiking enthusiast, leading visitors through the mountain prairies into the offshoot canyons of the Gallinas River that borders the refuge on the western edge. This 2.5-mile hike can be moderate in difficulty for the average hiker with rocky and dirt surfaces.

If visitors are bringing dogs to the refuge, they are required to be always leashed. We ask that all hikers always stay on trails, walking off trail is trespassing into a closed area.
